Need more details. Thumb sucking/tongue thrusting can cause lisping/slurred speech which bi-weekly instruction with a good therapist should cure. 6months - 1yr, possibly longer depending on motivation of the child. Worked in psychiatric settings with children. Sometimes trauma would induce speech problems that would resolve with psycho therapy. May be neurological damage/hearing impairment somewhere that a speech pathologist could assess. Bad parenting affects can be turned around. 6yrs just seems too long -possibly due to incorrect treatment. Would see a specialist and get a new assessment.

Its just depends on what kind of problem it is. Does he pronounce things wrong? broken English? or does he have a odd accent? He could have hearing difficulties. If a child has hearing difficulties, they might talk or sound different because they can not hear them selves very well. If he has broken English, then he could have picked that habit up from anybody, but most likely somebody who talks to him all the time who also has broken English. If he has heart problems or had heart problems as a baby and suffered a stroke, then that could have impaired his voice along with face muscles and tongue movement. Or if he has a learning disability and nobody has caught on to the problem till now, then it could be a issue that has always been there and just worsened over time.
I would take the child to a pediatrician to make sure he doesn't have a physical impairment, learning disability or hearing problem. Because if he has a hearing problem or even just a slight hearing problem, it can be very dangerous for a child to even be going around with out proper care for that problem. And even if you think he might hear you perfectly fine, it still may be a moderate hearing problem that only affects his voice. Please go to a doctor to find the source besides the speech therapist. You need to go to the doctor to find out exactly whats causing it, before you got to fix the problem with the therapist ok.. Good luck! I hope your little angel does well soon or get the appropriate care to recover.

Your son may have a speech disorder that has to do with a neurological dissorder I think it is called dyspraxia. Or your son could have a problem that is physical and no one has picked up on it. There are various reasons why a child cannot speak well, but I don't think that you and your wife are bad parents. If one child speaks well and another don't it usually has to do directly with the child, but it is not the childs fault, and if the child is getting theropy then that is the right thing to do. Work with your wife to find out what the theopist say about his condition and why he speaks the way that he does. There are just so many reasons out there. My son has a neurological condition that can be helped but not completely fixed. So get on line, do your research, type in why does my child have a speech problem and you will come up with several known speech dissorders, including cleft palates and high palates.

Some kids, especially boys, will be in speech therapy for a number of years. Therapy is not only for "speech" problems. Your son may have other difficulties with some form of communication, including reading, writing and pragmatics (the use of language in the appropriate contexts, including non-verbal communication). If you've got questions, talk to his therapist at school and find out why he's in therapy to start with, what the prognosis is, and how you can help at home.

Some kids just have a really hard time with speech. I had to take speech therapy for many years, even though neither of my brothers had any trouble speaking. Maybe he has a hearing difficulty or something.

It has nothing to do with abuse, parenting,or neglect. Has he had any testing done as to any learning disabilities?

I don't think that could be from stress. It is a possibility though. What type of speech impediment does he have?
