Other than grinding your own beans, what's the secret?

you have to get rid of the grounds the second the brewing is finished. the last drips from the grounds contain compounds that cause bitterness and astringency. (the drying of the mouth like red wine).
I use whole beans and keep them in the freezer and grind them for each pot.
I brew the coffee very strong so that when cream and sugar are added it still tastes like coffee instead of sweet cream.
I prefer 8 o'clock brown bag. Cheap and if you brew is as above it comes out with a good strong flavor with a nutty finish.

Sample different beans and find one you like then you need to get coffee beans that were roasted less that 3 weeks ago (fresh roasted beans is the big secret). Now you need a good water( if the water tastes bad the coffee will taste bad. A good coffee pot I don't like the flavor the fast brew pots offer.

I buy Flogers and this is what I do to make a good cup of coffee. I get a tablespoon and I put 5 spoon fulls in the fliter and put 10 cups of water you know the lines on the coffee pot, or you can really cheat and buy the already premixed filters that already have the coffer measured out for you and then all you have to do is put that filter in and add your water.. Happy drinking

Tim Horton's is the standard in Canada. They sell brewers and beans too.

HI
I love Star bucks coffee, it has a pleasant smell and different selections, real cream my granny used half and half and that was delicious. She also made hers with nut flavors brewed right in the coffee.
