What is wrong with religion? It seems to blind people. And it would seem that if there were no religion on this planet, things would be better? Is that right?

Nope, that is a delusion you have there. Religious people say the same thing, if there weren't other religions or Atheism then the world would be better. What you are doing is the same thing those of religion do, but yet you find fault with them. All things have their purpose, perhaps you should seek to understand the equation before you try to solve the problem, as their can not be a solution without the proper understanding as to why these different beliefs, isms, religions, prospectives exist. If you think Atheist eyes are open, then you are a slave to duality. The solution can only exist within yourself, you can't change the world from not being what it is, but you can balance your inner world and mind, and become enlightened by asking the questions why instead of finding fault and forming conclusions based on your dualistic prospective.

Perhaps religions are necessary for certain people, perhaps atheism is necessary for certain people, and perhaps they are specifically apart of these groups or thinking because it is supposed to be this way? Maybe to a religious person a Atheist is blind, while paradoxically the Atheist believes this of religions? The planet would not be better without religion, man is mechanical and the earth is as it should be. The problem isn't with religion the problem is with man, religion is only a creation, traditions. The world as I see when I look out of my window is much like a dwelling of learning, like a school. Perhaps people are where they are at because of their own development, or what they are working on in self? Anyways your question should be, would the world be better without mankind, since religion is not a thing of itself it is a thing which has come through and from man, as it is man who continuously brings suffering upon himself.

I don't think things would be better, although I get your point, I share that opinion.
Religion for me its all and every method of spirituality; its great for everyone to have a spirituality cause, lets face it sometimes we need that support, everyone does at least once in their lives to have some type of faith; however religion sometimes doesn't help to gain that cause you might get lost in all the rituals and forget the main purpose in the first place; people seem to forget that the idea was to love your enemy and end up fighting the ones who didn't share their point of view, just because an idea, but in my experience, those who follows idea on the name of religion, are exactly those ones that don't have a real spirituality nor faith; they need their method to get closer to their "god" if you know what I mean.
The majority of people in this world, without been rude, needs someone to tell them what to do, they need those methods to have a system they can follow; if they don't have them, they would get lost and everything would be chaos. If they have to think for themselves for once and forget about everything they have learned they would invent a religion the next day; cause people are afraid to be responsibles of themselves.
Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with religion, I think this world its better with a religion then without; for good or for wrong religion is a way of social and ethic control.

Religion is okay if tempered with sense. If people are taught to think for themselves and make informed decisions there is nothing wrong with wanting to make themselves a better person through religion. Take the good and leave the rest. Many find comfort in faith and that can't be a bad thing.

Truly religious people want to be good - not to hurt anyone. Most despots and politicians are not really religious.

Religion isn't the problem:

Evolution works because each individual create feels that they are better than any other, and wants to procreate more. There are two ways to make sure your genes are succesful:

1) Breed lots.
2) Kill other potential competition.

We have evolved with these principals in mind. Breed lots. Kill other potential competition.

That's why we are a sucessful species. War makes us sucessful and so isn't a bad thing. Religion has nothing to do with it except a moral justification to our violence. Without religion we would kill anyway.

Men have said such things immediately before ethnic cleansing.

You know, don't you, that 95% of the people in the world believe in a higher being of some kind?

Are you sure you want to call all of us "blind" without doing a little more research?

It's tempting to think that the world would be a better place without religion but it's not so. If there was no religion people would simply find other excused to oppress each other.

What is wrong with the butterknife that is used to stab someone 25 times? The knife is not the problem, the wielder is the problem.

A butterknife can be used as a tool of kindness or as a tool of cruelty. One act does not define it more than another, although one might believe it to be so.

the problem is with organized religion.
i don't know if the world would be better off without any religion, but it would be better off without the leaders of various religions trying to control people.
whether it's through fear of eternal damnation or the belief of paradise if you die for that religion.

There would be less wars, famine, hate. They would still exist but not on such a grand scale. Also without religion terrorism would be confined to postal workers.
