When I started skating I didn't look at the improvement for monthes. When I did I was amazed! My legs were really "tuned up" it had built some muscle but muscle takes more time. It will definitly tune your legs and over time build muscle.

A lot of skating may build and tone your muscles, but it will be a slow and difficult process if you don't do off ice workouts. My coach has assigned me to do a workout video by the New York Ballet and this is what truly makes a difference in my skating. I couldn't find the one that my coach gave me, but I'm pretty sure that the one listed below is similar. You'd be shocked to find out how much muscle it requires to dance like they do!

This is a standard workout that my coach told me to do some time ago, you will see a big difference if you do it:
1. Jump rope for thirty second intervals, with a fifteen second rest in between them three times.
2. A special kind of jump roping where instead of just jumping rope, you kick your knee up every time, so it would be jump with your left knee up, jump with your right knee up, jump with your left knee up, et. etc. etc. Try to do this 100 times, with each foot counting as one. It takes a lot of practice!
3. Just stretch and move your joints a bit to warm up a little more. Start with the head and work down to the ankles.
4. This is wear the gritty stuff starts. Put your body in a bridge position, like you were stuck in a pushup with your arms straight, and hold it for thirty seconds. Rest a bit and then go again, do it three times.
5. Lay flat on your stomach with your arms out in front of you like Superman, just not with your hands in fists. Lift up your hands and feet as high as you can and get them as far away from your body as possible. Hold this for four seconds, then go down for four seconds. Do this nine times. (While you are doing them, your stomach should be on the ground.)
6. Squats. These will kill your thighs for a long time! Stand straight with your feet under your hips, if possible you should do it in front of a mirror so you can make sure you're doing them right. Put your arms to the side, and when you go down put them in front of you. Don't go down as low as you can, go just a little past a right angle and make sure you don't stick your butt out, just sit with your body straight up. Sit and stand back up fifteen times. Do this three times. When they get easier, start using weights.
7. Stretches. This is pretty simple, almost anything goes.

Yes. Im a figure skater and my legs are huge because of muscle. It kinda sucks.
