Ive been doing Cardio to get rid of the excess fat on my stomach, If Ii do sit ups or crunches at the same time will this not build muscle rather than tone the fat? - thats what the gym instructor told me?!

most of the answers you have recieved are not true and anyone who knows anything knows you cannot spot reduce...its comes down to this...fat stores toxins in the body...the stomach is one of the easiest places for fat to be stored and therefor often one of the first places it goes on and comes off...you need to get rid of toxins in your body and toxic thoughts...try thinking yourself thin there is an e book for free you will find on the net and will give u lots of tips...drink more water to flush out ur system and start having a more natrual diet excluding crap like diet drinks and sweeteners which are FULL of toxic chemicals
good luck

Hi Blondie,

If I were you in this situation then I would look carefully at Letitia Ls answer as diet may be your problem here. Change your diet and when at the gym get one of the instructors to take you through some abdominal exercises. I say this because Abs done the wrong way can damage your lower back.

Wednesday nights at 8pm is a programme called 'The Diet Doctors, Inside & Out'...You may find that interesting as there is an abundance of information about a good diet.

Good luck.

Some people are apple-shaped, and some pear-shaped. Apple shaped people are mostly man: they have trim legs and arms, but if they start gaining weight, they have a belly. All the fat goes into the belly.
Pear shaped are mostly women. They have flat stomach, but big thighs, heaps, and butts. If they gain weight, it goes into thighs, butts, heaps.
Of course, if they are very overweight, they will eventually have
bigger arms or buttocks, but the "crisis areas" will be bigger anyway.
If they lost weight, it goes first from the "easier" areas: an
apple-shaped person will start by looking it off hands, shoulders,
legs, and the belly will be the last.
Sounds like you an an apple-shaped person. So, your fat goes last from the belly, and will go first into it if you start gaining.
You can either exercise very rigorously, and get it trimmed, or have a tummy tuck.
This said, remember that women are supposed to have some body fat, and more than man. It's their nature and it's in the structure of their bodies: for example, all female muscle tissues are covered with a layer of fat under the skin (it's normal), and males consist only of muscle tissue.

The tummy is a hard area to tone even if you go to the gym!!!!! Male & female fat distribution in the body is different & for women its bums tums & thighs that tend to be problem areas. The best thing I have found for toning ur tum (im 5ft & just over 7st) is Slendertone flex ab belt. You can see & FEEL a difference in days!!!!! My cousin says the same thing ( they are slim too) so it aint just me. It might take longer if you were overwieght generally but if not then it is fast acting & VERY effective. You can get from Argos, boots etc

you cannot do exercises to lose fat from any loaction so have to to exercie to burn calories and eat well to reduce calorie intake. The fat stores will be depleted with a calorie difference.

You must combine this with toning exercises which you can specify to a certain area. There are various abdominal exercises to tone the whole area. Ask the gym instructor for good exercises for upper and lower abs!!

Try doing Pilates, it really helped me. It firms the "core" muscles and gives you a plat stomach. If you can't get to a class buy a DVD or book abnd follow it. My family all have stomach's so maybe it could be hereditary too like saddlebags and large bums!
