My dad won an award as a Navy pilot in training called "Top Gun" (and he still has the trophy) at Mirimar in California where I was born. (Fort Ord) He then flew over 200 missions in Vietnam off of aircraft carriers. I ask him about the award and he says the award is not meaningful but his missions were. He may have been the first Top Gun...before it became glamorous in the movie.

Some of this data may be classified information. Your best bet may be contacting your Congressman or Senator's military affairs person. They can point you in the right direction. Even if information is classified, members of Congress can request declassification alot easier than you or me.

Military record are generally not available to the public. You can try to get it via the Freedom of Info Act, but what you get may be pages and pages of worthless jibberish with many things blacked out..
