I hate wasting it too, but, if you're in the west country UK the recycle info' Says - NO shredded paper. Stupid isn't it?

If you're still in doubt, phone your local council.
Check this web site:

Or look up recycle shredded paper on the net.

All paper is not the same. Newspaper and office paper are made with two different processes and can't be recycled into each other.

Just because you put it in the bin doesn't mean it is recycled. Bad material is simply sent to the landfill from the recycling plant.

If you want to make sure it is a recycled use a shredding service as they mix your shreds with all of their other customers and then send it to a paper mill that uses that type of paper.

I think the main reason more companies don't recycle it is because they don't feel there is money to be made in recycling shredded paper. It is unfortunate because in the long run there is a higher cost to buying new paper and causing more trees to have to be cut down. I would say if you are going to burn it and not recycle it then use the paper to help start your grill if you use charcoal or to start a fire in the fireplace or when camping. If you use it to start your charcoal in a grill then you don't have to use lighter fluid and your food will taste a lot better. By the way thank you to the previous poster who gave instructions on how to recycle the shredded paper. I will put them to good use once I have an apartment of my own.

some peopel say no because it blows around and can make a right mess at the reprocessing plant. To be sure call your council.

What mine recomends is to wrap it in newspaper to contain it and stop it causing problems.

If you have a compost bin you can put shredded paper in there which is really good. You could also find an animal shelter or friend who has small animal pets who could use it as bedding.

There are lots of ways to make use of it rather than throwing it in the bin if you cannot recycle it

Of coarse, all the paper gets squashed up as a pulp anyway the shredding is so no one else can read the secret stuff on the paper, just put the shreds in a Paper sack and not a plastic one, I always use old carrier bags for that

Apparently not. Sounds silly but we had a letter saying not to put shredded paper in re cycle bin. Maybe they dont like not being able to read our business at the re cycling plant

Shreaded paper can be recycle. They add chemicals in the paper plant to melt it & make new paper.

Of course it can, but transporting it in this state, which is more bulk than weight could become prohibitively expensive.

Paper doesn't change its composition just because it has been shredded!

Its fine, they will mash it and shred it at the recycling plant anyway.
