a fire in the 1970's destroyed all, or at least most, army personnel records held in the army records depot. unless you have his copies, or unless he was registered with the va and getting disability from service, you may be out of luck. you can try, if he is deceased, to get any available records the va may have. if he was wounded, or had some illness, or was an actual pow, they may have some of his records and you can request them as next of kin. contact the va at va.gov online. they also have a toll free number but i don't know it, but it is available from the va website.

What you have to do i send the SF-180 to an address in St. Louis to the Records center and they send a copy of his discharge and it takes about one to two months. Currently you can access it on the internet as well. Or go to your local Veterans Service Agency or Veterans Affairs office.

If you know your dads Regiment then you will be able to trace his whereabouts during the war and what happened to him. Contact the Ministry of Defence and they will help you to find the information you need.

MOD is a good place to start. Also, you might try the unit that he was with, if they are still active and see if their accounts might be more accurate, failing that, Imperial War Museum might be able to refer you.

Military Personnel Records

The National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records (NPRC-MPR) is the repository of millions of military personnel, health, and medical records of discharged and deceased veterans of all services during the 20th century. (Records prior to WWI are in Washington, DC.) NPRC (MPR) also stores medical treatment records of retirees from all services, as well as records for dependent and other persons treated at naval medical facilities. Information from the records is made available upon written request (with signature and date) to the extent allowed by law.

This site is provided for those seeking information regarding military personnel, health and medical records stored at NPRC (MPR).

If you are a veteran or next-of-kin of a deceased veteran, you may now use vetrecs.archives.gov to order a copy of your military records. For all others, your request is best made using a Standard Form 180. It includes complete instructions for preparing and submitting requests.
