Kids should be playing and socializing in kindergarden. That is the whole idea. Preparing them to interact in play and close proximity with each other before entering school.
Too often a computer is introduced to babysit certain kids so they are less of a problem to the staff.
I say Keep computers out of kindergardens, except in the staff office for producing memos flyers and keeping track of illness , payments and attendance

They are not needed, but they are nice to have. It is good that children can get a head start on computer literacy. They can also be a great way for teachers to set up learning activities and educational centers for children so that they can work one on one with others. There are so many great games that are educational. Kids all learn in different ways, so one may really thrive on the computer, while others do better with a book or something he or she can hold in his or her hand. It just gives another option to the class, and also introduces it early so that children are not intimidated by it later.

That said, time on the computer should be limited. No child should sit on the computer for hours at a time, or all during free play. The social interaction and hands on learning is essential, as well. Use it wisely and in moderation.
