That depends! A lot of people these days don't trust the medical profession. Knowing that doctors etc (in the UK) are paid vast sums of money by pharmaceutical companies means that you are not necessarily getting an objective opinion or diagnosis. I'm sure we have all visited the doctor with something that is in all probability a cold, and been given antibiotics! Pointless. But the doctors earn a fortune from the prescriptions they give out.
Also, getting a doctor's appointment isn't as easy as it used to be, so a lot of people may wish to get a few suggestions from a site like this before starting the wait in the doctor's surgery (with all those ill people!)
I think most people are sensible enough to know when their medical problem is so painful or worrying that they should be going straight to the doctor or even to hospital.
Sites like this mean you can get a bit of personal recommendations for perhaps non-drug therapies too. A lot of people have experience with alternative/complementary therapies and would love to be able to share their successes or failures.

Cave man, if you have a small space in your cave I would like to join you. Your question has been my query as well. Below is the answer I wrote to one such person who asked for advice because she was experiencing some pain and burning of the vagina during intercourse with her hubby: -
“I am answering your question not because I have any medical knowledge, but because I want to ask you and others like you…why do you people post such personal problems here? Surely you ought to know that the best option is to see a doctor. Luckily most of the answerers are decent people and that’s what they have advised you to do. However, you are leaving yourself open for some totally wrong ideas, crude wisecracks etc. For instance ‘medium_momma’ tells you to “LEAVE HIM.” For Christ sake what sort of advice is that??? Of course you should discuss the problem with your hubby and both of you should visit the doctor.”

There are three reasons:
1. They want to be secretative about their ailment
2.They want comfort that either they are not in serious problem or the treatment is in the right direction.
3. Response from people experiencing similar problems

Sometimes, just receiving someone's input is comforting, especially when you are wondering what it might be, what could happen, ect... Also, there are many of us low income families who can't go to a doctor every time we have a symptom. Just finding someone who can relate is really why we ask.

In my experience, the medical profession does not answer questions - and that is if you can get an appointment in the first place!!!!
