I am currently going through Chemo right now and find that plain ole Aquafresh, nothing fancy, is the only thing that I can handle. I do know that there's a toothpaste that the Oncologist can prescribe if he can't handle anything at all. I was also told not to use the baking soda as a toothpaste substitue because the chemo can really damage your teeth. Because of this potential damage it's important to use a real toothpaste. I was advised that inbetween brushing you can use a rinse of 1 cup water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda to help coat the mouth and remove any loose particles that may aggrivate the gums and tongue. Again though, I was told not to substitue anything for an actual toothpaste. Another idea maybe is to call your local dentist's office and see what they can suggest. Hope this helps!

It may be the Floride in it or the Flavoring. Before you purchase a new one, try this.

Make a paste of a small amount of water and baking soda. Have him use it and see if this is better. If it is, you can use it in place of toothpaste if needed. It will also help you determine if finding a mild toothpaste with baking soda and no flavorings would work.

I know some health food stores also carry a variety of what they call natural toothpastes, but are often very expensive. Some toothpastes in stores that are labeled for SENSATIVE TEETH are a lot milder and may not make him ill.

If he or you attend a cancer support group, ask your group memebers as I've heard of this being a problem with people having Chemo or Radiation and they may know the names of some toothpaste that they found solved the problem for them or a loved one.

Best wishes to you and your husband. This journey you are both now is hard and very trying for both of you.

GOOD LUCK and may he be healed soon.

Well losing a lot of weight is a big cancer warning sign-so if that starts happening without any explanation and you don't already know you've got cancer-get down to the doctors! Cancer can be growing for years without having any noticeable effects-but as soon as it is found you will most likely be given chemo for it (not always) and that will make you suddenly look ill as your hair MAY fall out (depends what type of chemo you are given) feel sick etc. As for radiation-a family member has had that and didn't get any bad effects at all from it. When cancer is advanced you can look really weak, thin, frail etc. but if you previously looked healthy, then it's the chemotherapy making you look so bad. It destroys your immune system for a while-kills the cells, which is why your hair falls out. I'm not sure if I'd want to put myself through chemo but then I don't have cancer so I can't say.

A paste of water and baking soda is a suitable substitute for toothpaste until he can tolerate toothpaste once again. Of course the baking soda has a light salty flavor but it will work if he can tolerate it. Also I believe it is crest who makes an orange flavor that I've tried myself and it doesn't have a really strong flavor. Perhaps he could try that. It is pleasant. I believe they even have a lemon flavor too. Good luck and blessings sent your way for your husbands complete recovery.

Maybe baking soda. Or just brushing with water is better than not brushing at all. Then rinse with Listerine. I used to just moisten my brush with Listerine and brush with that.
