No real midtown there....it's one big sprawling mess.

Stay around the Sukumvit area....but not near Nana (as a previous reply suggested) unless you want to visit the sex trade area - that's at nana (Soi 4).

They have it pretty correct above - Bkk has grown up as a city w/o an urban plan and therefore, there is no area that would coordinate with even the "neighborhoods" as you know them... however, there are many "centers" of activities, depending on what you are looking for... Sukhumvit area is probably the most foreigner friendly developed area.. Silom road or Siam Square would be similar... Though taxis are cheap, traffic is a waste of time, so you might want to be near to the skytrain.. unless you are there for biz or something particular, I would definitely recommend getting out of the city on either a short jaunt or day trips.. Kanchanaburi is interesting.. Beaches of Cha'am and Hua Hin are not far and nice.. you will find travel very easy, safe and the people are fun and friendly.. If you want more specific info, feel free to contact me.. I can also pass along via email a short and very easy language guide to help you along [be sure to include an email address if you do contact me] .. good luck - great place if you have never been here - - like a sunny Sunday afternoon in Wash Sq Park [ circa 1972 ] ...

There is no real midtown in Bangkok, It is one spralling mass. I would reccomend somewhere in the Sukhumivt rd., area near Nana, would be good, Depending on your budget. If it was me, I would stay at a hotel near Hualampong railway station, Its clean and cheap and has aircon and bathroom 500฿ to 750฿ ( about $15 to $20 u.s.) per night and close to the underground trains which link with BTS Sky train
