Tee shirts a little too large--they grow so fast- or a silver engraved ( baby's name and birth date) piggy bank (small)
with some change in it. Or make up a basket with teething rings, lotion, T shirt, and gum soother. (teething starts at about 3 months!)
A couple of cloth diapers help at teething time also.
It really depends on what you have budgeted for the gift. Visit the baby first if you don't know what he or she has already.
If you have a digital camera- get some pictures!!

My sister has a three month old baby, and unless you know how big the baby is, it's probably a good idea to either give money or a gift card to some place that sells kids stuff. I know Bella was really small at first and now she is bigger than the clothes for her age range. Also a nice thing to do, is to get mommy a present, cause she often gets forgotten now that there is a little one in the family.

I know that $ is always good, but it seems like you just threw cash into an envelope and put no thought into the gift. I would pick out an outfit and give a small gift card for the child. Sometimes when you give $, it doesn't go to the child but sometimes into the parent's hands. Remember the gift is for the child (baby).

Clothes are a good idea or you could think of getting diapers and wipes. Babies go through alot of those and it would be a big help for your friend.

the common gift tha were given to a child were toys and cloths. giving money for me is not a good practice to the child because there is a tendency that in the near future that child will keep on asking a money for they are used to it since they were child.

clothes I think are great. Especially since babies grow so quickly it is hard to keep up with them.
