Pretty simple:
1. They can afford all the costs involved.
2. They have the time.
Footnote: Average folks have other expenses to take care of first, and most of us can't take off work time to play.

I'm far from rich, and I hold a full time job, but I'm able to golf a lot without breaking the bank. I have a good set of clubs which I bought used a few years ago and saved a ton of money. They still work well for me so I have no need to go buy anything new anytime soon. Items like balls, gloves etc. are always on my christmas and birthday lists so family and friends keep me pretty well supplied in that regard. I work kind of odd shifts at my job so as a golfer that works pretty well as far as good deals on green fees. I usually have a Monday or Tuesday off and where I live a lot of the courses offer some great deals during the early weekdays. Also I'm usually off work early enough in the afternoon to take advantage of some good twilight rates too. So you can see that it's not just the rich that like to play golf. With some creativity and effort a working- class person like myself can play and enjoy the game too. Oh, and I've kicked plenty of "rich" butt over the years too!

It's not cause the rich likes golf, it's cause golf is considered a pretty expensive sport to play hence only the rich/upper middle class can afford to play the game.
Consider the following:
- membership country club which in some parts of the world can run up to hundreds of thousands of dollars
- the equipments (clubs, shoes, etc), compared to sports such as basketball or baseball
- the time it takes to play the game. Only the ceos and self employed can afford to play golf for one whole day during weekdays.

Golf is a pretty expensive sport, if you think of the start up costs for playing, if you buy high end equipment than you looking at spend about 200-300 dollars on wedges, 400-1000 dollars on irons, and 500 dollars on woods, add in a bag for 100 dollars, golf balls for 50 dollars and a few other misc items such as shoes, tees, and others 200 dollars your looking at somewhere around 1500 to 2500 dollars... than you have to pay somewhere around 50 dollars everytime you play and it gets pretty expensive... i wouldn't say rich people like golf more, but they can afford it. I aquired all of my items through working at golf courses, and playing college golf.. I also get free golf because i work at a place that gives free memberships, so i am not rich, but have found ways to play for cheap!!

It is not true you have to be rich to play golf!!!
If you think you would like to try or know you would like to play anyone can actually find a way to get started and start playing.
The far majority of golfers today are not rich.
Some rich people like to belong to private expensive golf courses but they are a small percentage of golfers.
You will find your golf at courses that you can afford or play the number of times you can afford. It depends upon how that effects you and your budget.

Is Golf for the Rich?
Day 146 without playing golf ...
Forbes' list of the 400 richest Americans came out today. I didn't make the list. I suspect the people who did are playing a lot more golf than me. I know Donald Trump is. I've seen him tee it up on "The Apprentice." He's actually got some game.
If you were rich (maybe you are) or richer than you are now, would you be playing more golf? I'm guessing you would.
As far as the Forbes' 400, there's always next year.

There are a lot of people who are not rich and enjoy golf, such as myself. I have been playing golf over 30 years and enjoy it. I wish I could play more. There is nothing greater than going out with your grandchild and showing them how to play golf.
Or is that you think if you like and play golf you are rich?

While many exclusive clubs exist, there are tons of working class folks who like golf. In the past, perhaps it was for the upper classes, but go out to any public course and you'll find all sorts of non-rich people. Like me, a teacher.

To be honest, thats not true. I like golf and I earn bugger all. Its a myth that it costs a lot to play the game. Wimbledon public course (South West London) costs 5 quid for a round in the winter.
I just like it coz I can take my agression out on a small ball which means I don't feel so much of a need to hit my boss....
