I am an 18yr old trainee dental nurse (started in Aug 06) and am an avid drinker of coffee.

Lately i have been having a string of really bad nightmares, usually the scary, confusing and creepy kind. I think that it may be because i have been having coffee before i hit the hay, but even then i have it any where between 2 to 3 hours before i sleep!

If anyone has any explanation - even if it blows my coffee theory out of the water - then explain away, because i can't cope with these restless nights anymore!

The caffiene in the coffee will make your mind much more active at night, which is likely to be causing your restless nights. They suggest not drinking coffee in the evening at all as it will cause this. The same applies to coke and other caffiene rich items. Maybe have a decaf in the evening if you want a coffee.

I'm a coffee addict, and I honestly don't think that a cup 3 hours before sleep would cause those nightmares.
I also get bouts of various sleep disorders like insomnia and night terrors, as well as very vivid and intense nightmares. I find it has everything to do with my stress levels and nothing to do with coffee!
If theres something worrying me that can trigger it off. So can a scary film or experience.
I;ve learned to accept the bad nights when they happen and make the most of it when they don't.
I must have tried everything to prevent it and the best thing is a calm routine before bedtime which means no news, no coffee an hour before bed because I need to get up and pee and no cheese sarnies.

One thing that people forget is that caffeine is a drug. In large amounts, it becomes a powerful stimulant. It does funny things to your subconscious as many drugs do. I know for a fact that caffeine can mess up your sleep. Up until 2 weeks ago, I drank Coke all hours of the day and night for many years. It was hard, but now I don't have ANY caffeine drinks past 6 p.m. Wow! What a difference!
Find a substitute for your coffee, like caffeine free Coke or Pepsi, and don't have any coffee past your lunch hour.
I'd hazard a guess that you notice a change in 1 or 2 weeks.

Sometimes the strangest things can cause nightmares could be the coffee could be a number of other things usually it's stress dreams have meanings they're things our right side of our brains can't put into a straight forward sentence so they're hidden it may be the coffee or may be some things your over looking in your life talk to someone who knows things about dreams and ask what they mean they'll soon figure out whats causing them.

Everybody's metabolism is different. Have you tried going without?
I need coffee to sleep. And usually the last dreams of the night involve me trying to make coffee, but something always goes wrong. Either there is no coffee, or I can't find the coffee machine, or the coffee machine is broken and I can't put it back together.
