It is fine during the day. Rent roller blades, amble along the board walk, go through the down town.
Just be careful at night, there has been gang activity on the rise there for the past 10 years or so.
If you are going to LA, don't miss Venice beach. Just be gone before dark.

The greater Los Angeles area can be a great place for a vacation, however I would advise against Venice Beach as a place to stay as far as hotels are concerned. Nearby Santa Monica is a much nicer area, with some splendid hotels.

The Venice Boardwalk is great for people watching, celebrity spotting, good restaurants. Santa Monica has good hotels, but pricey. Redondo Beach, south of LAX is a better bargain.

It all depends on your personality and your pocket book/wallet.
I suppose it also depends on where you are coming from.
Ya know, different strokes for different folks.
