Meiosis is the process that takes two sets of DNA and makes haploid egg or sperm cells. Prokaryotes (of which Archaea are a part) do not reproduce sexually, that is they never combine DNA together to make an offspring.

The only exception of this is the few bacteria that can transfer genes to other similar bacteria, but it is never a full set.

In sexual reproduction 2 gaemetes one from the female and one from the male fuse to variety an embryo. If say the organisim reproducing has 30 chromosomes in its cells, and does not undergo meiosis....So 2 organisims with 30 each mate and the embryo now has 60!! that's a mutation and maximum probable is deadly. So whilst meiosis happens before sexual reproduction the gamete cells pass from 30 to fifteen chromosomes (halving), so whilst 2 gametes fuse 15+15 a classic organisim of 30 chromosomes is born.

Meiosis is necessary in eukaryotic organisms because they reproduce by sexual reproduction. In sexual reproduction, two haploid gametes fuse together to form a diploid zygote. There are two sets of chromosomes in every diploid cell, so meiosis is necessary to cut the number of chromosomes in half to create a haploid gamete. If meiosis did not occur, the number of chromosome pairs would increase exponentially in every generation.

Archae and prokaryotes (single celled organisms) reproduce by asexual reproduction, simply dividing one cell into two new cells. Because this is just a division and does not involve fusion of two cells to create a new third cell, there is no need to change the number of chromosomes within the cell.

By definition, prokaryotes do not have a nucleus, and thus do not divide like eukaryotic cells. They just split in half and hope for the best.
