Or should one allways hold the glass by the stem if it has one. And is the rule different for men/ woman?

Do what you feel comfortable with. Only snobs hold it by the stem...it's very uncomfortable and more likely to tip over.

Wine glasses should be held by the stem IF one is holding them for a prolonged period, in order not to warm the wine. If the galss is being kept on a table, it is OK t pick it up, hold it by the bowl while you sip and put it back down again. Brandy snifters should be held by the bowl, because the warming effect of the hand and the high alcohol content of the brandy allows for the release of the intense aromas and complexity of the cognac!

The usual preference is the stem for chilled drinks (white wine, martinis, etc) and the bowl for room temperature (red wine, brandy). But no rule of etiquette dictates this, so you can do whatever you want. There's a difference between etiquette and fashion. (And nobody ever holds a snifter by the stem unless they have toothpicks for fingers.)

Such vessels are designed for the wine they are supposed to contain. The champagne flute is conducive to preserving the bubbliness of that libation. Stemmed wine glasses are to promote optimal temperature for the wine in order to best enjoy. There is no "social" rule/distinction re: men vs women, it's all about the beverage! As has been pointed out already, it doesn't really matter if you're among friends but if you're at a wine tasting party, it's best if you at least appear to know what's what.

Unlike most of the explanation I have heard this one attempts to make it a little bit scientific - wine tastes best at temperatures which are mildly cold. Holding the bowl transfers heat from your palm to the glass and then onto the wine interfering with the taste. I think the rule should be same for men and women as long as they are "HOT" ;-)

Hold it anyway you like, but the right way is by the stem to avoid warming the wine in the bowl with your hand.

It's completely appropriate to hold it by the bowl. I think the practical reasons behind the etiquette are pretty obvious.
