Would it make a difference?

Shallots are members of the onion family. They have a milder flavor than onions and grow, like garlic, in heads composed of multiple cloves. Widely used in French cooking, shallots are often not available in supermarkets in the United Sates, but you might find them in specialty stores or greengrocers. They really have a flavor all their own. Very subtle hints of garlic and a very mild onion flavor.

A red onion is very sweet...the sweetest of the onion bunch. I would say that this is not a good match. A white onion is quite a bit more bold. I would be careful about using a white one in your recipe.

You need to be careful about people telling you just to use a little garlic with your recipe. If you saute the garlic with the onion, most likely the garlic will become done before the onion. This will impart a bitter component to your finished dish. You usually only want to saute the garlic for a couple of minutes until golden, not brown.

If you must substitute, use a green onion. Pick the end of the green onion that is white at the bottom. This will be a close match to the mild flavor of the shallot

Yes, you could replace with a bit of white onion providing the white onion is not a strong one. Then add a tiny bit of minced garlic.

Shallot is of the onion/ garlic family and has a mild flavor.

I have made this substitution many times and the recipe comes out just fine.

depending on the recipe, you may want to cut down the amount of onion you use than the ammount prescribed for shallots

also, make sure you have a milder onion, maybe portion from a large vidallia, red or yellow definately NOT a strong white onion

if it would harm the texture maybe trie sauteeing or even boiling the onion just a bit to tame it

Using a normal onion will work just as well as a shallot.

A good replacement for shallots is Red Onions. Try it, it's supposed to taste the same.

Good Luck and enjoy the yummy food, hun! *hugs* :-)

Of course you can. Shallots are used for the appearance and for those who like the taste of onions on their own.

Yes you may but use fewer onions as shallots have a milder flavor.
