It is fine to have a portrait of someone smiling with teeth if that is how one normally smiles. A portrait will look infinitesimally more natural however if the face is in a relaxed position such as a faint smile or a small grin.
One way to help without having to use a mirror is to have someone (preferably someone funny, so as to make you smile) take your photo and then you will have some things to work from and an idea if a pose look awkward.
Best of luck.

I'm one with a classical heart, and I'd prefer a portrait without the smile showing teeth. It just has a better look to it. Now the face can express pleasantness without showing the wide, open smile. A closed one may be even more interesting and captivating.

I think you'll see the difference if you try it.

You could, and I think you are on the right way, because:
1. Portrait is arguably the most difficult discipline in drawing and painting.
2. Look at yourself in a mirror and draw, is by far the best training. One because you can't offend your "model", two because your "modem" is always available (unless you break your mirror).
3. Don't be discouraged : try again and again until you are happy with the result. Missed essays don't matter!

Why not?
I think it sounds very interesting.
I have never heard that teeth shouldnt be seen, but I do know that all the most successful painters broke the rules and traditions of their day.
Go ahead and paint your smile!

Do whatever you want, mate. If your pearly-whites are that dazzling, then show them off.
