In the next month or so we are hoping to move from Perth to Canberra and will need temporary accommodation for the two of us for several days when we first arrive.
Any suggestions or ideas for an economical self-contained, flat or apartment that we could stay in while searching for a rental? We hope to have one of our cars waiting for us when we arrive so transport will not be an issue.

It very much depends on your budget. A google search will offer you lots of suggestions for the many apartment hotels dotted around the city. The more salubrious areas with this type of accommodation include Manuka, Kingston and Civic. Here are some examples:

It's pretty challenging to find good rental property since demand is so high, so focus on something that offers you a longer-term rate if possible. You may have to wait a few weeks before you find the perfect rental...

You can also arrange appointments to view some rentals ahead of your arrival:

Check out LJ hooker's rental website, for example, at:

Best of luck and enjoy Canberra! It's a great place to live!

Your best option would be to log onto the ozstays site and have a look there. It has links to various apartment accomodation and units. Also so check out All Homes, it advertises rental house, units and share accomodation.

I live here so if you have any specific question about an area just ask. Good luck.

The easiest site is Cheaper than Hotels which has both last minute and year round accommodation which includes immediate bookings and availability at short term, serviced apartments at reasonable prices. They have both last minute and year round properties.

Some of the hotels and motels are useful, and they supply maps of Canberra to assist with the location as well.
