Yup. It's called tryptophan. And, if you eat approximately the entire turkey, plus maybe a couple others, you MIGHT eat enough to actually have it affect you.

Think about it though...you can have turkey every day. However, you rarely get tired from it. But on holidays, people eat turkey with all kinds of other things in a huge feast. The excitement, the alchohol, the caffeinated beverages, the sugar, even carbs...they all wear off leaving you without any energy.

Still, it is a good enough excuse, after the holiday meal, to stay inside and watch television with the family instead of going out and mowing the lawn.

Yes, there is a natural sedative, but studies have shown that you would have to eat A LOT more turkey than you do at Thanksgiving to account for the drowsiness after the meal. The drowsyness after the Thanksgiving meal can most likely be attributed to the amount of food and the loads of carbohydrates you ate.

Tryptophan is the chemical, yet you may might desire to injest purely the chemical to experience that's consequences. The sleepiness felt after eating a thanksgiving dinner is from each and all of the carbs and over stuffing one's self!
