Hey people,
Im thinking of buying a car from this person. Its a ford escort 1.6 LX. It is a 1995 N Reg.

It has done 85,000 miles, Its just had its MOT done for a year. The owner has all its service and MOT history, its had a new exhaust, tyres, clutch and brakes. It is a petrol car with FSH, central locking and power steering. The owner is selling it for £995.

Also, has anyone ever owned a ford escort and how reliable are they? Do they break down alot? Everyone please share your thoughts. Is this a good value for money and what parts are likely to fail after 85,000 miles?

Good enough car, cheap enough to repair but £995 is WAY too much for it. I trade cars and sold 2 recently at half that with same MOT. That money I could put you into an R reg vectra with change leftover. Dont give him a penny over £500 or walk away.

The only part I'd really be too worried about is if the timing belts been done. I think its 40k intervals for this. Other than that they are the same as any other old car.

Fords are reliable and hard working! I have had a lot of fords and rate them highly. 1.6 it wont have been thrashed as it hasn't been bought as a race car. Fords DO NOT breakdown a lot!! 995.OO appears a little in excess for an old car, its what 1995/6? The car sounds like it's been looked after and the seller is asking the said price as he knows the car is sound? I imagine the seller is not a young person? Parts failing at 85,000 ???? nothing major here, but do check the cam belt history? And if you need repairs DONT go to ford, it will cost you a fortune! Fords are easy to work on and most Fred in the shed type mechanics will be cheaper!

Has the owner changed the timing belt yet? If not, it is due to break, and when it does, the motor is toast. The Ford 1.6L engine was built too tight and when the timing belt breaks, it will bend the valves. That means getting the head rebuilt or a new motor. The belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles or so I believe. I changed many in my day as a mechanic, but that was years ago and I don't remember the actual mileage. If you can find one with a 1.9L engine, you would be much better off.
