Cool whip (whipped topping) is whipped cream, so yes. Now whipping cream is a whole different animal, and it is not WHIPPED cream. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. But yes, you can use whipped cream in place of cool whip. Hope I didn't confuse ya. :)
Here's a hint: You can use Dream Whip mix (in the baking aisle) too.
You can use whipping cream, and whisk in sugar and some cream of tartar (to keep it from collapsing). There are recipes for that if you need exact directions/measurements.

It will not work with the ice cream cake, I'm afraid. I already made that mistake once. The consistancy of the cool whip is much thicker, it is the same result in making a french silk or a strawberry whipped pie! The whipped cream cannot hold it's shape.

You can use real "Whipping Cream", which is what Cool-Whip is based on. However, You CANNOT use the stuff that comes out of a can. Once it hits air, it begins to decompose and it will deflate. Even once frozen, it will not keep. Once it thaws it will be little more than gummy, nasty goo. As a former baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Cake maker, I am telling you do not use a can. Cool-Whip really is the easiest solution, although a baker's "Whipping Cream" is awesome taste-wise. Don't they have a generic brand of Cool-Whip? If you cannot locate it, then get your hands on Whipping Cream. You will not regret it..

If you actually use real whipped cream (cream that you whipped until it turned fluffy) you should probably add some sort of sweetener because cool whip is really sweet. But other than that i think it would be the same.

Cool Whip is a brand name of whipped cream. Same thing, slightly different recipes. It's basically just cream and sugar, blended at high speeds to add air so that you get that light sort of texture.

Yes, it will probably be better that way. Cool Whip is just a whipped cream substitute.

You should choose anything you like.
If you are calorie counting then you should read the nutritional labels.
It is more of a preference.
Hope that helps.
I personally love whip creme!

No. It does not have the same consistancy and it will go flat.
