What does the Bible say about the practice of smithying? Can I do it? How about broader forms of metal forging?

Isn't there something in there about beating swords into plow shears? I would think you're okay there.

Smithying. eh? Is that what the teenagers call it these days? Of course it's a sin, but you can do it anyway. Go ahead. About 'metal forging' -sounds kinda kinky. I'd stay away from that.

I did a search on http://www.biblegateway.com and it gave me 3 passages from 1Sam 13:19 and Isaiah 44:12 and 54:16. I found them by entering the keyword 'blacksmith'.
One of my paternal grand-fathers was a blacksmith and it is an honorable profession if you use your talent to honor God.

The member who posted the verse Leviticus 18:23 had nothing to do with your question. That verse he gave has to do with unlawful sexual relations/sins.

Thou shalt not engage in the heating of the metal and banging of the anvil with the hammer. Also, thou shalt not engage in the practice of welding. This is an abomination to the Lord your God. Thou may engage in the practice of glassblowing, but only in an approved shop class.

-Leviticus 18:23

What is blacksmithing? Not to sound stupid. I wouldn't think it would be a sin.

It's just a job. All it says is an occational mention of "turn your weapons of war into tools of peace" type things.
