Don't be afraid to sound "cliche". Conventional, familiar expressions are the most comforting. Misguided originality is what leads to tackiness.

Good question. It can be really difficult coming up with the right words.
I would suggest you just write something like
"so sorry to hear of your sad loss. Thinking of you.".
Then sign your name.
Something short and simple. If the person was a close friend you would be expected to write something longer.
