Well, there's all the typical places, I suppose. (Chuck E. Cheesy, McGagme.)

Here's some creative/original ideas.

1) Call the entemology department at the local university to see if they ever allow the public to see their hatcheries. (Little ones LOVE bugs, often. This might be a real thrill for him.
2) Science museums frequently have activities and areas for toddlers.
3) Call the local fire-department. Ask if, as a birthday treat, you son could sit in a fire truck. One of my nephews got to do this for his birthday, and he was talking about it forever!
4) As a meal idea. . . . what about some sort of Buffet restraunt? It doesn't sound like a great place for youngsters at first, but toddlers love helping to make decisions. At a place like the Hometown Buffet, your son would get to make many decisions, like a 'big boy.'
5) Never underestimate the power of the zoo. Many zoos have special programming in the wintertime. You could visit some of their indoor sites. Like their reptile house.

Those are a few ideas.

I hope your son has a great birthday!

Quill.

I hate Chuck-E-Cheese or McDonalds. I did love renting out the local toddler gym for a couple hours. It was nice and private and the kids were free to run around. The downside is that it can be more pricey because you might have to provide all the food/drinks/cake/decorations.

Good luck and happy birthday little guy!

For my son's 3rd birthday, we had a train theme. What we did was very easy and fun for the kids. The main event was lining all the kids up train-style with an empty paper bag. My son was at the front of the line as the "conductor" (red scarf, pin-striped overalls)...the train had to make 5 stops along the track, where an adult was waiting with a goodie for their bag. It was a lot of fun for the kids to chug around OUTSIDE and not inside to trash the house!

Gymboree is fun

Weather permitting - a small zoo or a petting zoo

Is there a Monster Truck Jam in your area around that time? (I just took my 2 1/2 yr old to one and he had a blast).

Go to one of those ceramic places, where the kids can paint a cup or leave a hand print on a plate. Kids love painting and Grandparents will love to plate/cup

3 is a hard age to have a party for. Unless it is at gymboree, or small gym. Good Luck!

Do you have a community center nearby that does parties for preschoolers? That is always fun.
