I guess that you must be on Atkins or something like that as you are trying to avoid milk for your hot chocolate. Well, first of all, if you check with Atkins you will find that you can actually use heavy cream instead of milk, which will help alot in your hot chocolate. I was on Atkins for a long time, so know of what I am speaking. Also, one of your basic problems is that you used Equal. It's one bad property is that it doesn't always work in hot things. It seems to work in coffee, but it breaks down funny in a lot of heat. I suggest that you try Splenda, it seems to work better and is sweeter. I find that Equal is just not that sweet. It's hard to make hot chocolate without milk. Look at a site called the Low Carb Connisieur, they offer a lot of different things, maybe they will have something you can work with.

A couple of thoughts.

1) A cup (8 oz.) of nonfat milk only has about 100 calories, all carbs. Carbs won't kill you. Eating 3000 calories a day and watching TV all day long will. Enjoy the milk and go out and walk for an hour or two.

2) Aspartame breaks down with heat. That's why you should never bake with it. I don't know how long it lasts in hot chocolate.

3) You need some sort of emulsifier (fat or protein) to smooth out the cocoa powder, or it will just be a soup of little chocolate bits. Nonfat milk has protein, but no fat. Or if you really really want to skimp, make your milk with powdered milk but only use half the recommended amount of milk powder so you get only half the calories but a little of the advantage of the milk.

4) If you are trying to avoid carbs, why are you drinking hot chocolate? The fat in the chocolate will probably do you more damage over the long run. If you want the benefit of the cocoa powder, get yourself a glass of water and a Coco Via bar. Hershey's actually deserves some credit for making a pretty healthy snack... it's cocoa powder, fruit, and pretty low in calories and carbs as those things go.

Enjoy.

You could try adding sugar substitute, but be careful because if you end up ingesting a lot of aspartame, it can cause GI problems. I suggest using splenda as a sugar substitute because it gives drinks without milk products a still sweet taste (i use it more than I use sugar now) and it doesn't contain aspartame but a derivative of a natural sugar so you won't have any GI problems with it.

Try soy milk or something - I think there is about 1/8 cup of sugar in 8 oz. of sweetened hot chocolate.

I'd get a low fat sugarfree cocoa mix, fix several packets of it up and either drink it hot or refrigerate it and pretend it's chocolate milk. There is also the chocolate soy milk stuff. I think anything you mix up out of aspertame and unsweetened chocolate is gonna be pretty depressing.

Ick.

Umm...you could add a whole crapload of sweetener, but good luck with that. Oh...and make sure your water is REALLY hot. That stuff doesn't exactly disolve real well.

Otherwise, I'd go for Swiss Miss's nonfat version.

Try going on there website www.equal.com - then look for recipes on hot chocolate. Or try this site www.allrecipes.com- type in hot beverages you will get lots of varations of hot beverages that uses either equal or other sweetners like,splenda.com another type or sweet-n-low.com. Just add www. fill in the name. One more site since your looking for www.davincigourmet.com
Now they make special clear syrups with splenda and they are low in calories. Try going to a Borders Book store and they use those syrups in there Latte`s,Epresso's they are hot drinks just ask for a shot in your coffee. I hope this helps :}

You decide on sweetness or strength of choc, the key is to mix choc& sugar first.
