I live in a country where yogurt is a condiment (and the language that gave yogurt is namesake), so this question frequently comes up. Generally a large container of unsweetened yogurt will be okay for about a month or so. If it starts to smell off or change color, it's time to throw it out.
The whole gist of yogurt is that it is a dairy product with a longer shelf life (think Central Asian nomads crossing the deepest Kara Kum).

I've had a cup of Strawberry-Banana in suspended animation for up to 4 months with no ill effects. Each one may be different because of the type of fruit, check for a funky color or smell. Besides isn't yogurt just a type of bacteria growth in milk?

I look at the sell by date and keep it until then. I have a real problem with milk products, and as long as I finish it, even if it's open, by the sell by date, it is ok. Also, you should smell it before you eat it to make sure it seems ok.

Not sure, but when it gets that pinkish-orange watery stuff on top, it's time for it to go.
