cause my cats dont really play anymore and they are all under the age of three and they use to be very active, so was I. and they sleep alot more and they even have a really sad face on most of the time and even when they are with me or alone and i walk into the room and notice. I just feel so bad like its my fault. they always want more attention and i do give it to them whenever i hold them and basically treat them as if they were my own children. but they are still depressed I guess if I want them to be happy again I need to take care of myself.

YES! Animals feed off of their owners...I have four cats...everytime I am sad and cry my two kittens come by my side...When my H and I fight all four cats start to get sick and sometimes all four will start throwing up at the same time...I think all creatures feed off of what is around us...Otherwise why do people say, animals can "smell" fear? Emotions can be contagious...If animals didn't react to their owners emotions then why do animals owners play with their pets or talk to them or rub them...you are connected. I don't beleive in giving animals medications for depression and that kind of stuff but behavorial changes can really help livin up that sad cat and it may also help the owner as well...a nice side effect....good moods are contagious as well. :) Good Luck!

Yes, they can, but they tend not to.

Cats are incredibly responsive animals and very sensitive to their environment. They know when there is a change in you. Believe it.

Most cats are very resourceful and take excellent care of themselves... which is why I like cats more than dogs. I don't have the time to "babysit" a dog. My cat needs no babysitting whatever. But she likes to "visit" now and then.

If I am low, she knows something is wrong. My tone, energy level, maybe my posture. She's happier when I'm happy, but if I choose to be sad, well, as far as she's concerned, that's on me. She'll wait and do her visiting later.

She does check on me now and then, which is pretty funny.

Cats do get depressed - when they are sick, when they are in pain, when they are missing someone. Cats can also sense if their owners are sick, in pain, happy, sad, stressed, etc. I know that wehn I am stressed for several days, my cats will start displaying behaviors associated with stress: constant vocalizing, marking, inordinate grooming. When I am feeling poorly, my cats will sit or lay down beside me. When I am sad.... my cats try to cheer me up with foolish antics. Do theyget depressed when I am depressed? If they do it is only because I stop playing with them.

Yes, all animals sense mood changes in their owners. The best way to deal with this is to make sure you give them plenty of attention and talk to them. Believe it or not, talking to your pet as if it was a human is good for them. Pets can sense tones of voice changing.

Hi Emma...cats are very sensitive to our emotional changes, however they may not necessarily become depressed if we do rather may be more in tune with being comforting to us in our time of need.

[edit] as cats begin to age they also slow down so it may not necessarily be that they are depressed rather they are acclimating to your lifestyle changes. If you have a laser light toy consider playing this with them to entice play. I'm sure they would really love it and it's something easy to do as well as a wonderful way to cheer yourself up watching them behaving silly chasing the light while having fun too.

yes I think you are right. So, you'd better get on with managing your own depression then your cats will be fine too.

Sure, why not? I believe cats are like children-they sense our moods accurately...

I don't think so. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance and it is not contagious.
