If you are an American citizen you only need to carry a valid drivers license or some sort of Picture ID ....student ID...etc in case of an accident they will know who you are

While traveling domestically you do not need a passport. If you are not a US citizen, I would suggest that although you do not need to show the passport when traveling state to state, I would always have your passport with you in case you do need to prove that you are here legally.

If you are coming into the United States from outside the country
the exact same documentation that gets you in will be good throughout the country in all of the states of the U S .....there are no border guards and check points with the exception of the airports and the borders between this country and Canada and Mexico ....

Nope. If you are traveling by car / bus you don't need anything (unless you are driving, then you need your DL).

If you are flying, you do need your photo ID (DL, Passport, ID card) for security purposes.

Your passport/greencard is only necessary if you leave the country and plan to come back. The green card otherwise is for employment / residence purposes only.

If you are just here for a visit all you need is a passport and it will not be checked from state to state only when you enter the country.
