If your pit is a puppy, the vaccines start at 8 weeks of age typically. He will get a series of 3 distemper vaccines given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Distemper is a 5-in-1 shot that covers different diseases. At 16 weeks old he will be old enough for the rabies. This is required by law in my state and I believe most other states but the law varies some.

Depending on where you live in you may also want to get the Lyme vaccine. Lyme is a disease transmitted by the deer tick.

If you are planning to board your dog at a kennel or go to puppy classes (anywhere he'll be around other dogs), you might also want to get the kennel cough (also called bordetella). All kennels where I live require this if you are boarding. It's strongly recommended now to also keep your dog on heartworm prevention all year round. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos and is fatal and very expensive to treat. This isn't a vaccine, it's a once monthly chewable the dogs eat.

After this initial puppy series, the vaccines are given once yearly except the Rabies. If the Rabies is boostered the following year before it expires it may be good for 2-3 years (once again depending on the laws of your state.) Your vet should go over all this with you, but that's a rough idea anyway.

Your puppy will need 4 sets of puppy shots (distemper, parvo, andonavirus, and parainfluenza), a bordatella, and a rabies. You will need to discuss with your vet any other vaccinations for your area. Some vets like to vaccinate for corona virus, leptospirosis, and lymes but it is better for the dog not to receive them unless there is a problem in your area.

go to your vet. they will tell you what and when shots are needed for your area. rabies is a must. you really should have researched all of this before getting a dog.

corona is a very deadly disease and is reoccuring in many areas, mainly the east and midwest and being misdiagnosed as parvo in older dogs. this is happening because owners have become lax in giving this vaccine. go with what your vet says. they know what diseases are more prevalent in your area.

There are 4 shots. One has 7 different things in it, and one is Rabies, one for Bordatella and one for Parvo.

Good luck.

They need to be given by a vet. He will know which ones your dog needs.

Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies. That's it, anything else is unnecessary and should be avoided.
