Colleen is mistaken. It used to be the tradition in many places for the best man to marry the bride if the groom didn't show...kind of like insurance that her reputation would stay intact. It's not followed anymore, though, and would never have been the bride's brother anyway :)

That may have been true in the days of arranged marriages but nowadays I don't think so. Most people marry for love and if the groom does a runner then the bride usually falls into a heap crying, or vowing revenge.
You could test this theory though by following the first answer and seeing what happens.LOL.

Ummmm no one ever married the best man...that is not the role of the best man. The best man is basically an "aide" to the groom. If the groom doesn't show up no one gets married, period.

I don't believe the role of the best man is to take the groom's place if he doesn't show up.

SO in other words....you are jealous because you want to be the best man. right? And because of this; you cant help but slash out and slam your brother's chosen best man.

I don't think the tradition remains. However, you could lock your brother up on the day of the event and see what happens?!?

I have never heard of that tradition and it sounds silly. I don't think anyone would do that.
