I would make sure to get him enrolled in a puppy socialization class now, pits need to be socialized from an early age. You need to have him well trained and I would recommend having him in a training class as long as possible (the longer the better). This helps develop a stable well rounded dog.

I think that they best food is Natural Balance, but Purina Pro Plan, Nutrisource, Nutro Natural Choice, Nutro Ultima, and Purina ONE are not horrible brands. I would not recommend Science Diet, Iams, or Nurto MAX.

Join www.pitbullforum.com and you will learn TONS! Ranging from different behavioral issues, training and what not. It is an excellent site, especially for the first time owner.

Also, check out pbrc.net They are an excellent resource as well.

As far as food is concerned, I would aim for an all-life stages formula such as Canidae, Wellness, Merrick. There are some awesome adult foods out there, which you could transition the dog to once he/she reaches 6-9 months. If an all-life stages formula is not what you are interested in, there are several excellent puppy formulas. Blue Buffalo, sold only at PetsMart, is a very good holistic food.

You want to avoid any corn, wheat, soy, by-products of any kind, beet pulp, BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin (found in fish based foods). There might be more to add to this list depending on whether or not you dog has allergies, which the vet can help you with once he gets started on a food. Avoid foods like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet (no matter WHAT your vet tells you--it's CRAP), Purina (even Purina One, the Selects, anything made by Purina), Pedigree, anything that you can find in a grocery store. If money is not exactly comin in by the truckloads, Nutro makes a decent food. However, if you do your homework and shop right, Canidae will be cheaper. If you have any other questions, send me a message and I will help out where I can.

contact your local rescue and find out who they reccomend for training. your friend has taken on a large responsibility, and one i hope they are prepared for. take the pup to the vet and get vaccines as needed and reccomended by your vet. have the dog spayed or neutered at 5-6 months of age, and feed a high quality premuim food. also make sure the dog is well socialized and exercised regularly. take for walks at least twice a day. start training now, and socialize now. most pups need to be well socialized by 16 weeks of age. i'm glad you're looking for info, just be well informed and responsible. this is a great breed, but one that has such a bad reptutation, your friend is going to need to do everything they can to prove others wrong. good luck.

You don't NEED a puppy. WHY do you want either of these breeds? Are you experienced? I would NOT recommend a Pit Bull to someone like you, particularly in Virginia.

My Pit pup has a sensitive stomach so I feed her a dog food with Venison as it is easy on their stomachs. She doesn't handle lamb or chicken well. At least not in dog food.
There is a product called Pet Botanics Beef and Rice Log and she loves that and handles it well. Just get a quality dog food and stay away from Costco or Wal Mart or Sams generic brands or foods with lots of fillers, by-products, wheat etc.
Mine eats Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice. Dick Van Patten has a Venison and Potato brand in Natural Balance. Both of those are excellent foods. Perhaps someone else here knows of another Venison brand. But that is great for dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Also she gets 3V Skin Caps which I get from the Vet, it has Omega 3, Vit A, D and E in it and is great for her skin and coat.
Sometimes I mix some pumpkin pie filling in with her food, or plain yogurt or cottage cheese.
For training, I used a Kennel Cab not much bigger than she would be at full growth. Pits are very smart and mine potty trained quicker than the other two that I have.
She is more of a challenge when walking her. I have to be very dominant with her when she is on a leash and catch her attn. before she gets in that zone of spotting something and fixating on it. Overall, she is a great dog, great with kids, people in general. She is very loyal, very loves to be around her people. Whines if she wants something or bats me with her paw to get my attn. She's adorable. You will LOVE this dog you are getting!
Socialize her from the beginning. Take her to training classes, dog parks, walks, get her used to people and the public.
Never train a dog to "guard" you. They will do that if you are threatened but people who try to guard dog train animals usually screw them up.

They are very good dog's , and very smart. But they do need lots of socialization this makes them friendly and blows all the pit bull Haters theories out of the water.
Good luck and enjoy the dog they are great if raised right.

the best advise I can give you is the one that you will not take.

Pit bull are a very dangerous dogs. there were way to many incident that a very cute Pit bull lost it for no reason. When they loose it, they have the power to hurt someone badly and even kill.

my advise- take a different kind of dog.
