As you can see, most of the answers suggest sleep paralysis and just about everyone experiences it at one time or another. It really is scary, but sometimes, things seem more acceptable when you know you're not the only one, or that it's quite normal!

Its called sleep paralysis, and it is SO frightening! I've dealt with this ever since I was a young girl. The experience is so intense that in previous times, people used to believe that it was a demon or witch sitting on your chest trying to steal your soul. Even today, most people who experience this feel that someone is in the room with them, some experience the feeling that someone or something is sitting on their chest and they feel impending death and suffocation. Scientists still don't know exactly what causes it, but it occurs more frequently in people who have disrupted sleep schedules, a history of panic attacks, and a family history of narcolepsy.

sleep paralysis and night terrors may be related but they aren't the same thing...the men in my family have true night terrors...its sort of like sleep walking but much worse. they go nuts running around the house screaming at night. sleep paralysis you cant move. in both some mechanism that is supposed to stop you from getting up and walking around and acting out your dreams is malfunctioning, but in night terrors it never kicked in, and in sleep paralysis it doesn't turn off when you first wake up.

Wow that same exact thing happens to me, I never know exactly how to put in into words though so when I try to describe it to my friends and family they think I'm crazy! It is such an incredibly scary feeling though, I can relate.

This is sleep paralysis (as others have told you). Yes, I have had it, I hated it and it scared me to death each time it happened. It has not happened to me in many years and I hope it never happens again.

Yes every one does it , I think.. I have those dreams and am helpless, and know it is a dream and I try to get my wife to wake me up, I make noises and sometimes she wakes me up.. I walk around a bit, and forget it. i don't know what I would do if I was alone and no one to wake me. It bothers me about not being dead and they bury me. wwwwhhuu.!!!
