Switch everything off...

The other way is illegal and you can be prosecuted and go to jail if you do it. (Using a magnet)

Besides turning everything off in the house, you need to stop the flow of electricity through the meter. This requires opening the meter base and pulling the meter and applying some kind of jumper across the meter lugs.

You could also connect directly to the service line that feeds the house on the electric company's side of the meter.

Either way will get you a fine if you get caught (and you will). If you have been doing it long enough and cannot pay the fine and back charges, which the electric company will produce, you will go to jail.

Usually the main breaker is just below the meter, so shut it down. That will stop your electric meter.
