G'day

Melbourne!!! Wellll... where should I start?
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day like last month, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well.
9. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.

Living closer to the beach will be the suburbs of Altona, Port Melbourne, Williamstown, St. Kilda, Elwood and Brighton to mention some that are pretty close to CBD. You can cross reference with some real-estate websites to know the rental costs (www.realestate.com.au or www.domain.com.au).

Running out of ideas, but I hope that I can at least give you some more informations that have been provided by the answerers before me.

Good luck and welcome to Melbourne. I've been living in Melbourne for 16 years, visited some other capital cities in Australia and still giving Melbourne 10/10 for the best city in Australia.

Hi,

I've lived in Toowoomba, Queensland for 5 years now and i personally think that its one of the better places for a young family to live. Yes, its a small country city but it has everything that you need minus the stressful and hectic life of a large city !!! Shops, cafes, schools, a university .. you name it !

Cost of living over there is extremely cheap compared to larger cities like Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney which means you'll save heaps !!! Plus, Toowoomba is situated only a 45-60 minutes drive from Brisbane and approximately 2 hours to the Gold Coast and 2.5-3 hours drive to the Sunshine Coast !! Feeling bored during the weekend or on holidays ? You've got 3 different cities to keep you occupied !!! Plus, public transport to and from Brisbane, the Gold coast and the Sunshine coast is very efficient, if i've not mitaken theres a bus which runs from Brisbane to Toowoomba and vice versa, every hour of the day until 7pm.

As for a holiday, i'd say it depends on what you intend to do. If you're a shopaholic, i'd recommend either Melbourne or the Gold Coast. Within the CBD of Melbourne lies heaps of shops, whatever you're looking for, you'll find it there ! And not forgetting the shops around the Crown casino, goods there are a bit more costly but branded ! As for the Gold coast, i personally think that shopping wise, its almost compareable to Melbourne only smaller. Whatever you find in Melbourne, you can get it in the Gold Coast as well only that the shops may be smaller ! The Gold Coast also boasts a HUGE shopping arcade the Pacific Fair !!! Not forgetting the Harbour Town shopping arcade where u can get branded stuff for a fraction of the original price all year around !!!

However, if you're a non-shopper, i'd recommend either the Gold coast of the Sunshine coast. At the Gold Coast, theres the beach as well as other tourist attractions such as Movieworld, Dreamworld, Wet and Wild and Seaworld which will keep you occupied at least for 3-4 days !!! As for the Sunshine Coast, its not much of a shopper's paradise but it has one of the most beautiful beaches i've ever seen. The sceneries are awesome and the waters beautiful. Once there, a visit to the Rainbow beach and Fraser Island is a must !!! Other tourist attractions on the Sunshine Coast are Aussie Zoo, Underwater world and a few more !

Well i hope this helps, and wherever you choose to stay, good luck to you and your family ! Take care

I live in Adelaide and think it's definitely the best place in Australia to live, but not a great place to holiday. Adelaide has the best features of a city (nightlife, shopping, jobs) and a country town (not too big, clean air, open spaces). I think it's better to live here than Melbourne or Sydney because the city is planned better, it takes only 30 minutes to drive to the other side of town and it's an inexpensive place to live. The beach, wine regions and Adelaide Hills are all within easy reach. It's also in the middle of Australia, so it's relatively cheap to fly/drive to the other capital cities.

The best place to holiday would be the Gold Coast for me. I prefer destinations that have it all: great food, tourist attractions, shopping, beaches, cocktails, tours to nature parks, day spas, etc. I love to have the choice to wake up each day and choose something completely different from the day before. The Gold Coast has theme parks galore (Movieworld, Seaworld, Wet 'n' Wild etc) and has plenty of other rides and quirky museums and attractions. The only drawback is that overall the food seems to be trapped in the 1950s to a certain extent (lots of cheeseburgers and fries), but it's all part of the Gold Coast experience.

I think you would Love the Gold Coast. i have travelled to 28 Countries and have a choice of at least 3 of them to live but I choose The Gold Coast. You wont get sick of it and if you where one of those rare people who don't like it here then Brisbane is just up the road 1 hour away. I have been all around Australia. Darwin is a great place in the dry season April to September but expensive. Perth is lovely but isolated to the other Cities and expensive also. Someone suggested Adelaide. yes a little cheaper there but smaller of course I think you could get bored there. The Gold Coast has many events happening through the year. Prices are very competitive so prices in many things stay down.

I think Sunshine Coast (about 1 hour north of Brisbane) is good. It has many attractions but not a lot of visitors go there, unlike the Gold Coast. It's quiet and the scenery is nice.

To live: there's a lot to be said for country towns if your children are young. They can easily participate in a wide variety of sports and other activities without you having to spend your entire life playing taxi, and in smaller towns you can let them play in the street without having to worry about them. In the cities most young families are out in the suburbs, where one big city is much like another.

Sydney is the largest city and has many things to offer. Tourists are heavily attracted to it and sometimes end up moving there.
