You have two candlesticks, one thick and one thin. They each take exactly one hour to burn out completely. How do you light them so that you know when 45 minutes have passed?

Helpful hint: You can light either side of each candle - when you light both ends, the candle burns out twice as fast!

Note: You cannot use anything to help you time it, or that might affect it. No props, only you and the candles. You cannot use a timer, you can't cut or break the candles in half, nothing.

Light the one on both ends, and the other only on one end. As soon as the one you lit on both ends burns out i.e. a half hour, light the unlit end of the one still burning. And when that burns out it will be 15 minutes later, and 45 minutes in total.

Light one of them on both ends, the other on just one end. As soon as the double ended one is gone, 30 minutes will have passed. Immediatly light the end of the other one. Since only 1/2 of that candle will be gone, after 30 minutes, there will be 30 minutes left to burn in the candle. Lightin the other end will divide that time in half, making it just 15 minutes left. 30 min plus 15 min equals 45 minues!

Light first candle on both sides.. when it burns out, that should be 30 minutes passed. When half of the first candle is burnt, Light the second candle on both sides... allow both candles to keep buring and when the second candle is done burning, 45 minutes should have passed

how's that?

I will take a guess.
Light one candle (candle A), let it burn half way.
Light the other end of candle A and one end of candle B
As soon as candle A is used up, blow out candle B.
What is left on candle B is 45 minutes worth of candle

Do I win? :>

Oh, and if there are only you and the candle... how do you light it?

Light only one and place it next to the unlit one. When the lit candle burns down to three-fourths of the size of the unlit candle, you will know 45 minutes have passed.
