Okay, so this is my dilemna. In December, my uncle asked my boyfriend and I if we would want to go to a play with him. He told us about the play and asked when we might be available. We said most likely on Sundays because my boyfriend goes to school on Saturdays and during the week is way too busy for both of us. So about 2 weeks ago, he called and left a message on my voicemail saying that he had bought tickets to the play and it is on January 21st. He did not consult with us to make sure that we were even available this day, and it turns out that we are not. We have plans to watch the playoffs(Bears!!) So, our question is, what do we do? Do we tell him that we are unable to go because we had previous plans and wish that he would have asked us if we were available before buying the tickets? Or do we just suck it up and go with him (and cry the whole time because we are missing the game of the year?) What do you all think?

It sounds like you really love your uncle. And you didn't want to hurt his feelings, so you have waited two weeks to respond to his invitation. That so sux for everyone. Honestly, it might have been better if you let him know as soon as you received his message, and maybe you delayed dealing with this because it stressed you out. I really can understand and relate. At this point, just 4 days before the event, you may have waited too long...feelings cannot be spared as well now. You know your uncle better than I do. Do what your heart tells you.

Record the game and go to the play. You didn't even know the Bears would be in the playoffs till 4 days ago! And no, I am not a sports fan, but even I know the game was this past Sunday that decided the Bears would be in it!
So it is too late to back out now. Be adults and go to the play. If you tell him now that you are unavailable, he will know something else came up that you would rather do than go with him.

You can sacrifice for your uncle's sake. He has gone to great lengths and bought tickets for you and your bf. He even left you a message on your answering machine two weeks ago! If you were to turn him down you should have done it the moment you got his voicemail message. Looks like you made your plans to watch the playoffs after he got the tickets. So go have a wonderful time with your uncle. There will always be other playoffs in future

If it was me, I'd tape the game and go to the play and be happy about it. He did something kind for you that you expressed interest in. Then, after the play and after you thanked him, mention that next time it is better if he checks with you first. Don't mention the game at all to him.
I'm assuming you like your uncle and that you are planning to watch the game on TV. everything changes if you don't really like your uncle or if you have tickets to see the Bears game live.

I assume you are planning on watching the game on tv, not in person. If that is the case, record the game, go to the play. The uncle made a very nice gesture to you, appreciate it. Plan a late night watching the game when you get home.

Well were you doing to watch the playoffs on TV? If yes, then tape the playoffs and go to the play. If you were going to the Playoffs, well then you need to speak with your Uncle and let him know that he needed to let you know in person and not just to leave a v/m.

Just be honest with him, he should understand that he should have cleared it with you before buying the tickets.....not only that but who knows when the next time the Bears make it to the playoffs!!!

That's life. Send him with your boyfriend to see the game. You take some girlfriends to see the play.

You record the game and make sure to not hear or see the outcome anywhere, and when you get home, you watch the game. It's very rude to not go to the play with your uncle.
And yes, I am a sports fan.
