There's a nice wine called Charles Shaw. It's kind of expensive, though. I can't afford that stuff.

Seems like you got some silly answers! Don't go with Charles Shaw, if your partner shops at TJ's they will know you didn't try that hard to get a nice wine and this sounds like you want something special (which Charles Shaw is not). TJ's is great for wine at the under $50.00 level. The questions I would have is what are you severing and does your partner normally drink wine? But off the top of my head go with a Pinot Noir. First, it is the "in" thing in wine since Sideways. Second, it is a very versatile wine with food and very easy drinking. Only problem is since Sideways the prices have gone up. Shell out $20 and get a nice bottle. Cost Plus World Market and Costo (believe it or not) are good places to pick up wine. For the best results go to your local wine shop and tell what your evening is about, your price rage, and what type of food you will be eating and they should be able to find you a nice wine.

Depends on if you like red or white. Used to be that everyone said that you had white with Fish and red with Meat. That has sort of gone out of style these days. It's more a matter of taste and really how heavy the meal is going to be. If it's a heavy beef dish, still think that red is best, but I think red is best for everything. You can get away with white with meats, it certainly goes with chicken. Some heavier fishes, like Salmon go better with reds. Also, if it's a really romantic dinner you may want to try a different wine with each course, but that can get confusing if you don't know a lot about wine, which you must not, or you wouldn't be asking this question here, and it could get expensive.
Other than picking a color of wine you have to decide on how much you want to spend. wine range from the $2 a bottle where you get what you pay for, and it won't be all that romantic to over $200 a bottle for a wine that isn't even ready to drink yet, which of course isn't what you are looking for. Probably best to stay with a California wine, they are a better deal these days with the dollar being so bad, even low quality French wines that used to be good buys have gone way up in price. For a red stick to a Cabernet, it's usually safer in taste, and for a white, find something that is like a Chablis, don't go for a Savigion Blanc, usually too sweet. I don't feel comfortable giving names as I don't know how much you want to spend, so I think the best thing for you to do is to go to a good wine/liquior store in your area, a place that you trust, and speak to someone there who knows what they are talking about and not going to push you towards the daily special, tell them what you are cooking and let them make the decision for you. It's worked for me when I've had questions and I know a lot about wine. Good luck and have a great dinner.

Champagne is the answer. Try Philippe Gonet blanc de blancs from le Mesnil sur Oger or Perrier Jouet. Alternatively, a nice Ferrari Spumante from Italy or a Prosecco di Valdobbiadene from Italy is perfect too. Have it with Lobster Thermidor and Oysters Rockefeller. Superb!

Depends on what is being served. I myself like a good Merlot (chuck for a buck at trade joes is REALLY good cheap wine but has a really good taste) but some would rather a white wine..it all depends on what your tastes are.
