First it should come from the Indian govt. It should stop asking the caste name of the citizens in its own application forms.
The caste should not be associated with any person in any govt records, except in census (for demographic purposes) that too kept hidden from public access.
The govt should stop caste based reservations for education, employment and promotion and should provide incentives or subsidy only for economic backwardness and the geographic backwardness of a region. And where it applies, such a subsidy should be limited in time, to the qualifying individuals.
Will Indian Govt become a standing example, first ?

The first thing that the Indians should do is to understand TRULY what is caste system. Without this understanding how can we eliminate something that is a misconception?
There was never the intention to have a"higher" caste or a "lower" caste. It was NOT on a vertical scale . It was on a horizontal scale. It was turned around vertically to suit some vested interest. These arguments will fall flat now and there is no use raising this. It will be like the "kashmir "issue. People have taken rigid positions and we have to live with it.
What will happen is that the solution for this caste system will slowly emerge once the economic condition in India improves. There will be enough oportunities for everybody. If the so called "lower" castes are given 80% seats in IITs and IIMs of Indian educational scenes , new super IITs and super IIMs will automatically emerge to attact talented and merit related people. The system will go on and ANOTHER form of caste system ( to replace the existing one) will evolve.
In different forms such caste system exists everywhere . Only that they donot call it by that name .

Caste System was an old system of Division of Work/Profession in ancient time which was subsequently ritualized and made into a rigid 4 tier society which we inherited from the past. The only way caste system can be gone by natural mean and not by Law or Parliament is to bring rapid economic development where a Barber would become a neuro surgeon and a nuero surgeon can carry out a good hair cut. That's the only solution. Look at all old societies and ow and what changed them. The answer is economic growth.

/*Stop using so called decades old oppression as an excuse to get all kinds of benefits */
That's a rediculous comment. Decades old of oppression is still having effects on major population. If it is not the case, then why 90% of the upper castes are socially and economically in good position and why more than 70% of the lower caste people are living under poverty?. Does it mean all the uppercaste people are meritorious and lowercaste people are brainless?
Caste has nothing to do with merit, but oppression over the ages definitely has. Let them come up and be with the main stream. Once it happens, then the caste system will automatically disappear.

This is a very tough question to answer. I don't think this would happen anytime soon.
The only way that I see this happening is if all the people in India stop believing and Hinduism. I’m not Hindu but from what I understand the cast system is based on Hindu beliefs.

I AM AN INDIAN. Its redicule to see such questions. Yes, cast is there globally. I have visited half of the globe for work, official and for touring. Tell me a single place where cast is not there?
For sure the number of casts are much higher in India compared to Middle East, but the troubles are much much lesser compared to Middle East and even USA (for Rasism).
I consider this is a bad question.

What is the need to do anything about it? If someone doesn't like to be in some caste they can always change into some other caste. It is so easy to even change ones religion, it ought to be easy to change caste. Unless, of course, some politicians are exploiting such class warfare, which is often the case.
