What would you do if while you are sitting in your car in the parking lot of a grocery store, someone bumps a grocery cart on the side of your car and causes a scratch?
Although it was an accident, is it enough for you if he apologizes with a frawn on his face or do you ask him to pay for the damage that he has caused and how much? What is the exact thing that you would do? especially that your car is only one year old?

Well first off I would hope that as a minimun you recorded the date, time, location and their plate numbers and vehicle description along with a description of the person. At best you got their personal and insurance information.

They need to pay for any damage they caused. I had a person load their car and shove the shopping cart which rolled into my Harley Davidson and caused damage. I got accross the parking lot in time to stop their car. All she said was "Yeah and? Pfttt!" and drove off. I took the description of her vehicle and her to the police and filed a report. Weeks later I got a summons to be in court. Seems she told the police she didn't know what I was talking about. I identified her, and brought a store clerk who identified that she was there that day. She had to pay for damages, my and the clerks salary for the day we took off for court and a hefty fine.

You worked for your money and spend that money on your transportation. If someone carelessly damages it they need to pay for that. Here in Europe most people have personal insurance to cover such incidents.

Good Luck

Well, if they apologize and give you their insurance information than all is well. Just take it in stride and try to keep calm. To be on the safe side you should call the cops so they can write up a Police Report. In some states if the accident is deemed no fault of yours, your deductable will be waived.

If the person acts like a moron, get their license plate number, keep your cool and call the cops.

I would absolutely tell him (not ask him) to pay for the damages. An apology doesn't pay for the paint which would either have to be matched to the existing paint or in the worse case scenario be an entire new paint job.

If you're happy to bear the cost then, sure you don't have to do anything, but he did damage your car, so he should have to pay the damages. You would have to check on whether he has car ensurance and read yours and see what you are entitled to.
