Every time that my dog goes out, he needs to be told to go potty or poopoo several times. He goes out in the cold snow, stands, eats snow, looks around, and even sits down. His chain must be nugged and he must be told ten times at least to go. This is the case for most dogs. Do you know why they do not just go out and do their duty without being told? Cute and nice answers please.

Dogs need to be trained. They have "code words" or signals even, that they learn and know what to do with, like "go potty". If it take 10 times of telling them, then they probably haven't been properly trained. State what you want from them, wait and when they do it, say "Good dog, or Good [their name]. Say it in a deep serious voice. Remember you are the "pack leader". Most puppies and dogs can pee almost on command. Some want to sniff around a bit to check their territory and overmark where another dog has been. As for bowel movements, that may take a little more time. Dogs need to walk around a bit and get things moving and will go when it is "time". You may have to be patient with that one. Best to take them out after a meal, a nap or after playing, especially if they are puppies. Once older, they will usually let you know when they need to go or will have gotten on a particular routine. Also, in this day in time when we, the owners, are so busy and we leave "our friends" inside alone for too long, they get very bored and will do whatever they can to stay out as long as they can. Best to get in a routine of walking them a couple of times a day. Good luck. If you have been doing this a while, it may take a while to break old patterns and establish new ones that you want.

They are not from our world or civilization. If you think about it dogs are pretty amazing creatures to be able to understand so much of a totally foreign culture. Why they do what they do isn't always apparent, however if we understand that they DO do that, we can get along much better with them. We all have our quirks and this is one of theirs. All I know is that I love dogs no matter what and even if I were the only one in the world that did, I still would have it no other way. And my dogs understand this so who cares what other people think?!! :-)

The best way to get your dog on a regular bathroom schedule is to take him for long walks. A dogs digestive system needs to be stimulated by exercise before it will really need to go to the bathroom. If the dog just stays inside all day, he won't eat or drink as much, and he won't need to go to the bathroom as much. Its just like humans. If you are a couch potato (and only eat when you are hungry- instead of boredom like many people), you aren't going to expend much energy, therefore you won't need to eat as often. But if you are a very athletic person, you will need to eat a lot more and drink a lot more.. therefore you will have a more regular bathroom schedule.

With the exception of rain and snow, dogs love to just be outside. They are smart and know that we don't want to clean up after them, so they trick us into thinking they really gotta go, right now. And we fall for it, usually at the climax of a movie or in the middle of dinner. Dogs are so cute, aren't they?

Because they know when their duty is done, they go back inside, they take their time because they want to, it some what has to do with you being the pack leader, only because they are obeying your command.
When its extremely cold I work my dogs up inside the house, by playing tug, and "puppy in the middle" or just bouncing a ball off the wall, so their muscles are all worked up, so when they go out, they go quick(if you know what I mean).

I tell mine to go and when they do, I make a huge deal out of what GOOD DOGGIES they are. They love to hear my voice, and so they do it on command.

Someone has told him to go potty more than one time, everytime he goes out.

It works like this...if you tell a dog to Sit, Sit, Sit, Sit, Sit, then the dog will learn to Sit, Sit, Sit, Sit, Sit (ignore all previous Sit commands until I WANT TO SIT).

But, if you tell him to SIT and then push his butt down and reward him, he will learn to SIT (one command only) and will do it when YOU want him to.

Someone says to potty too many times, so your dog thinks that when he decides is best...not when you decide.

Practice other commands one single time, and then enforce them with rewards afterwards. He will get the idea about potty time eventually.

:)

He really wants to just be outside and wak around. Dogs don't usually just run outside, do their thing and hurry back in. They really like to be outside for a while and they like to find just the right spot. I know it's irritating to wait for them when it's cold out but that's just the way of a dog.
They need regular exercise.

like kids some dogs just need a gentle reminder of why they are outside. good for you for going out with your dog. it takes patience and consistancy but your dog will learn why they are out there. also playing with your dog right after going and praising them will maybe make them try to go sooner, so they can get the attention reward!

I think they like to go out to smell and enjoy the air when they are taking their time. Our dog sniffs the air in all direction then sits down. Sometimes she takes her time, and sometimes she hurries and goes.
