I've been using AVG Free Edition on all my computers for years. It does an excellent job detecting viruses. You can schedule scans, it has a resident shield, e-mail scanner, and you can download virus definition updates regularly so it's up-to-date, just to mention a few features. Best of all, it's FREE. The website to download it is http://www.grisoft.com if you are interested.

You can use Panda, they have a demo you can download, clean up your computer, make sure your firewall is on, then un-install it. In a few months if you need it again, re-install it, and you get another 30 days, unless you are downloading lot's of unknown files and being foolish there is no reason to have a virus protector running 24/7 it eats up loads of processor time.

Google Panda, it works great, fast and clean
