There is no concrete evidence that cell phones will cause explosions in the presence of flammable vapors. When fires or explosions have been started at gas stations when people were using cell phones were most probably caused by static electricity.

Of course almost any electrical gadget can cause a spark if it malfunctions.

In addition to the arc caused by switching an electronic device on or off possibly causing a fire, there is also the danger of a spark being generated from build-up of static electricity due to the high use of plastics in many electronic devices.
