I had a wreck over 9 years ago, and I never had a weight problem, now, I'm 43 and am paying big bucks to lose going to the dr. and I've lost 17 pounds in 2 months, which they say is the best...but, every week, one tells me, I'm not eating enough, or eating too much, or not exercising, or not eating little meals every few hours, ect....how does your body know if you are eating food, when you or so they say, can lose weight on say, slimfast, what is the difference in eating, vs. vitamins, vs. liquid diets????? To me, liquid diets are just the same as vitamin/mineral supplements taken with say V8...would someone tell me what to do...I have never had a weight problem, and all I can think about is food, and I know I am an emotional eater, and know why, but, I am going to lose to 120 which I weigh 175 now since I've been with the dr....I am alone, my kids are gone to college, and I want to know is there anyone out there that has this same problem.

Supplements are only supplements. Nothing can truly replace an entire diet full of carbs, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Besides, if you eat solid foods, you are less likely to feel hungry and eat compulsively or thoughtlessly (snack while you watch TV or something and later realize you ate the whole bag of chips). Your brain uses glucose as its fuel, so you still need to eat actual foods and not just drink your way to a thinner you. Walk 10-30 minutes at a brisk pace after meals to help speed up the process of weight loss.

liquid diets are fine for a short period of time as long as you include protein, carbohydrates and fats and fiber in them.

adding fats to your drinks will slow gastric emptying. what that means is that it takes longer for the contents of the stomach to pass to the lower GI tract. this will keep you feeling full longer.

another problem with liquid diets is that you do not burn as many calories metabolizing food. this is called the thermogenic effect of foods. so even though your body is getting all of it's nutrients because they are liquid it does not take as much energy for the body to metabolize them. that being said I would at least try to eat 1-2 whole food meals a day and have 3-4 liquid meals along with that.
