this is a ploy of the advertising companies. Way back with the 8 track cassettes they started this type of marketing. Which I still have by the way as well as a fairly new player.
Keep your old T.V. It will still be compatible 10 or 15 years from now if not more. No worries!!

To put it simply, No. You do not need to buy a new TV in 2009, even though it would make your TV watching alot better.
In 2009, all broadcasts have to be digital, but not necessary HDTV. You can have a standard definition signal in analog or digital. All TV's will need to have an internal or external digital to analog converters for older TV's. All old TV's can still be used, even when all the TV stations go to digital.
For example, a cable set top box has a built-in digital to analog converter because you can connect an old TV with composite or s-video, which are analog signals.

Carl_the_ left off the final statement on his response "You will have to buy a box to receive digital signals" and connect that box to you analog TV. If you are currently using an off the air antenna and your set is displaying ghost images, you might consider buying the Digital to Analog tuner sooner, as with the digital signal you will receive a crystal clear signal, even on an Analog TV.

Yes it will work, but by then you will WANT to have an HDTV. The government will be handing out (2) $40 certificates to each household in order to buy down-converters for regualar 480p tvs.

No, your current TV will NOT work because all stations will be sending their signal digital. Your current TV is analog. You will have to buy a box to receive digital signals.
