Sedimentary rocks are laid down under water, so to "transfer" them requires uplift and erosion. This is accomplished by orogeny or mountain building, followed by wind and water working on the mountains to wear them down again. Any entry level physical or historical geology book will explain the rock cycle, and so will this site with a really neat rock cycle picture: http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/rock.html
