I think because people see spirituality as believing in the spirits such as gods, godesses, and/or God. And atheism is considered to be the lack of such beliefs.
What is your idea then?

Here are some reasons why theism and atheism are diametrically opposed:
Theists are faith driven; atheists are proof/reason driven.
Theists are spiritual; atheists are non-spiritual.
Theists belong to a religious group; atheists tend to be individualists.
Theists believe in the supernatural; atheists are analytical.
Theists are right brain dominant; atheists are left brain dominant.
The list goes on and on.
Peace!

Well, I for one am an Atheist completely opposed to religion and spiritulaity in general. I think people who call themselves Atheists but still have a tendency for spirituality lack a certain courage.

The title itself suggests that. A theist is a believer in God and an Atheist is against. It's what the word means. If you believe as theists do that God is a spirit. Then it would stand to reason that spirituality has to do with a spirit which atheists deny exist. They believe in material explanations for everything. There is no material explanation for spirit.

The issue here is: what is meant by spirituality? Lacking a good definition of it, it is difficult to come up with an intelligent answer to the question.

the problem with atheists is that they refuse to believe in miracles, which is okay, but they fail to use reason too. They fail to appreciate the perfection that exists in the universe, how exact and how it runs so perfectly that they are able to make calendars years in advance. The variety of animals and food and people, how can all this come about with chaos and not with design?

I think most people confuse religion with spirituality.
They can't conceive of being spiritual without believing in a deity.
