I'm amazed that firedup's grandmother can manage that. How does someone who doesn't exist manage to have children?
This is a very interesting question really. I'll be sure to look out for some real answers.

I have been able to trace one family line back to Norway some time around the birth of Christ or a little before (1 AD). I found this information on www.familysearch.org which is the Mormon geneaology site - really a great site.

They found a caveman in Britian, did a DNA search on the local population, and found a match. Wish I could remember where I heard that. Although there are a few thousand years of missing data on that family.

one of my aunts traced our family back to the 1600's the last i heard. its been her hobby for the last few yrs. It got more difficult to do once all the records to be traces were over in Europe.

Depending on your belief system, It may be ADAM & EVE.
No Joking, before the printed word in almost every society someone was designated to teach several others to be able to repeat word for word every detail of family history that he or she had to be able to repeat back word for word to whoever taught her & on & on far into the past.
The Romanaffs of Russia have one of the longest documented lineage.
Certain Chinese & Asian lines can be documented for over a thousand years.

Check out the book of Luke in the Bible. It goes all the way back to when God created Adam.
